Unofficial Renderings of the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Making the Rounds

The first images of what we believe to be the next-gen Jeep Wrangler leaked just yesterday, but already the folks at JLWranglerforums.com have come up with their own renderings based on what could be seen in the original shots.

The leaked images, likely Computer-Aided Design (CAD) renderings, were black and white, grainy, and didn’t show much detail. These renderings very skillfully incorporate everything we saw yesterday into glorious high-resolution, full-color depictions of the new Wrangler Unlimited. In the front, we can see the more upright grille that slants back slightly toward the top and has notches in the outer grille slats for the headlights. Those headlights feature LED rings and a horizontal bar in the middle of the housings. The redesigned bumper looks a lot like the one on the current Wrangler Recon and Hard Rock, with the foglights moved outward. On the fenders, we see the slim LED daytime running lights that will help many tell this model from the outgoing Wrangler. The character line below the windows almost makes us think of a Mercedes G-wagen, and the vent behind the front fenders serves as another cue that this is the new model.

In back, the hinges for the tailgate have been reversed from how they appeared in the leaked image. It’s possible that shot itself was reversed, as the Wrangler has had the hinges on the passenger side for two generations now. It’s also possible, however, that the JL will indeed switch things up in back, perhaps to make accessing the cargo area from the curb easier. We’ve heard that the taillights on the 2018 Wrangler would be similar to those on the Renegade, so the production JL may look different than these renderings.

With the top off, we can better see that the roll cage is completely redesigned and attaches to the body at different points in the rear. We can also see mounting hardware for a spare tire on the tailgate, though it’s possible the spare will be an option in order to save weight. The interior is likely a complete guess. Expect FCA’s latest Uconnect infotainment system to be offered, however.

The 2018 Jeep Wrangler won’t look exactly like these renderings, but we think it’ll be pretty close. What do you think of the JL-series’ modest makeover? Tell us in the comments below.

2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon Gets Chilly

Today marks a cool dozen teaser videos showcasing the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon coupe’s drag-racing-focused, factory-equipped features. The street-legal drag car will feature another production car first: a liquid-to-air charge air cooler chiller system.

Unlike conventional air-to-liquid intercoolers that use non-evaporative warm or hot antifreeze cycled through a radiator to cool the charge air induction temperature, the Demon’s system uses evaporating R134a refrigerant from the car’s air conditioning system to cool the charge air. The AC system’s refrigerant has a higher potential to reduce intake air temps. Dodge claims the system can lower the intake air temperature by as much as 45 degrees Fahrenheit.

The only drawback from this design we can see would be that the cabin air temperature would suffer while running the climate control inside the cabin. But as any drag racer – or any racer – knows, air conditioning is one of the first things to turn off before a race.

Last week, Dodge revealed that the 2018 Challenger Demon would receive the world’s first application of a TransBrake for a production car. Other unique features to the SRT Demon include a wide-body with drag radials, an after-run chiller, a larger cold air intake, and reduced weight via removing the carpet and making the front passenger and rear seats optional.

Check out the 12th teaser video below and keep hanging in there as we wait for the tease to finally end on April 11 at the New York auto show.

2018 Porsche GT3 RS and GT2 RS Spied

Racetracks around the globe are put on notice — not only is Porsche plotting your imminent demise with the likes of its refreshed 2018 911 GT3 RS, but will additionally bring to market the widow maker that is the 600+ horsepower 2018 911 GT2 RS. Both of which were recently spied in the wild and sporting near-production exteriors. Color us excited.

Equally, Geneva saw the reintroduction of the manual-equipped Porsche 911 GT3, the manual trend likely won’t continue into either car featured here. Rumors peg both the GT3 RS and GT2 RS PDK only.

For those that want a true track weapon, as these cars are likely to be, PDK is how you eek out faster lap times. Only drivers like Lewis Hamilton, Mark Webber, Leh Keen, and Patrick Long, would most likely have the ability to properly drive a manual-equipped version of these cars with any proficiency, meaning PDK for us normal humans.

Porsche GT3 RS 10

As for hardware, the GT3 RS will be the GT3’s more track-oriented offering. As you can see in the spy photos, the GT3 RS receives a new front and rear bumper, side skirts, and modified hood vents, which are cleverly covered in these photos. The refreshed GT3 RS will likely be propelled by an upgraded 4.0-liter naturally-aspirated flat-six, and power is expected to be around the 525 horsepower range.

The GT2 RS is a different animal all together.

Reports are sketchy at best on what will power the upcoming machine, ranging from a highly tuned version of the current 911 Turbo S’s 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged flat-six to a turbocharged version of the 4.0-liter flat-six found in the GT3, GT3 RS, and 911R.

Power is rumored to be between 620 and a stratospheric 700 horsepower. What we do know is that, like past GT2s, this model will ditch the 911 Turbo’s all-wheel drive system in favor of a strictly rear-wheel drive setup.

Porsche 911 GT2 RS 6

Like the GT3 RS, the GT2 RS will only be offered in PDK, ensuring every ounce of its astronomical horsepower figure is sent to the ground. In the spy shots, the GT2 RS receives a similar exterior package as the GT3 RS with vents in the front fender flares and hood.

It also receives enlarged 911 Turbo ducting in the rear fender, the new intakes above the engine compartment as the GT3, and a truly massive rear wing. Additionally, while the front splitter is still not production-ready, you can see dive planes tacked onto the fascia.

For those needing more visual aids of just what the GT2 RS will look and sound like going down the road, here’s a video of it lapping the Nürburgring.

Both cars are expected to debut within the next 12 months, and will be the send-off to the current 991.2 generation 911. Stay tuned.

Toyota HiLux Tonka Concept Ready to Play in Life-Size Sandbox

The “unbreakable” Toyota HiLux gets a Tonka makeover, transforming the truck into an extreme rock-crawling, off-road vehicle. The Tonka Concept celebrates the HiLux’s achievement of becoming Australia’s best-selling vehicle last year.

Designed, assembled, and tested by designers and engineers from Toyota Australia’s product planning and development division, the HiLux Tonka Concept was created to capture the excitement of kids and adults alike.

“Inspired by the Tonka trucks that kids play with in their backyards, the HiLux Tonka Concept goes way beyond the already hugely capable abilities of HiLux to traverse rocks and other rugged terrain,” product design chief Nicolas Hogios said in a release.

Beneath the black and yellow paintwork and off-road goodies lies a SR5 HiLux powered by a 2.8-liter turbodiesel I-4 engine. Engineers raised the ride height 6 inches and equipped the truck with high-riding axles, a heavy-duty suspension, and 35-inch tires. The hood features carbon-fiber skin, a “power bulge,” and air scoops. A light bar and roof pod provide bright LED lighting for off-road trekking. A 6 mm-thick metal skid plate protects the engine and other components while tubular side rails protect the body and chassis.

The bed sports storage boxes and a removable tubular frame that keeps gear in place including the diesel fuels cans, fire extinguisher, axe, shovel, and high-lift jack that come with the truck. The tailgate, wrapped in carbon fiber, incorporates an integrated spoiler, two air vents, and a lightweight strap in place of the traditional tailgate release handle.

This isn’t the first life-size Tonka truck we’ve seen, not is it even the first Toyota Tonka. The Toyota 4Runner received a Tonka-branded extreme off-road overhaul in 2015, while a Ford F-750 was transformed into a Tonka dump truck that same year for the NTEA truck show.

Although the HiLux is not available in the U.S. market, sales have topped 16 million globally and over 920,000 in Australia alone. The Toyota HiLux Tonka Concept will unfortunately never make it to dealership showrooms but can be seen touring Australian auto shows and expos.

Five-Acres, a Junkyard, and Over 300 Possible Classics in Need a New Owner

Do you want to get away from it all and own a collection of vintage vehicles of varying degrees? Then the Great White North is calling you.

How about a rare 1927 Ford Model T truck, a 1947 Mercury Ute imported from Australia, and a restored 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle with a 396-cubic inch big block V-8 engine and a four-speed manual transmission?

These are just a small sampling of the over 300 rides that will be included in a real estate sale in Tappen, British Columbia, Canada.

Owner Mike Hall, 60, tells Driving that he has been collecting cars all of his life. For the past 40 years he’s bought up vehicles all across Canada.

Hall owns so many of them that he lost count, but estimates that there are at least 300 or so that will be included with his property sale to whoever can cough up roughly $1 million bucks ($1.45 million Canadian.)

Mike Hall

“Just today I have responded to 31 inquires already,” says Hudson Purba, the Century 21 realtor who is handling the sale.

The property is currently zoned for auto salvage. In addition to all those rusty cars, the lucky new owner will also get a 900-sq-ft restoration shop, a 1,200-sq-ft steel building, and plenty of extra materials to build more storage space.

Hall estimates the vehicles value anywhere from $500 to $35,000 a pop, but we’ll let you be the judge of that.

“I started accumulating cars when I was 20. First it was 50 cars. Then the collection grew to 100. I bought more and more. It’s easy to buy them when you’re working. It’s like an addiction. With 100 cars, 200 seemed better, and now its well past 300,” Hall tells the Canadian site.

Apparently, the highway rock scaler’s wife put the kabob on his epic collecting habit and demanded he stop using their organic farm as a parking lot.

“Everyday, I’m torn about selling the property with the cars. I’m still buying cars. It’s like a sickness that I’m not getting over,” Hall said.

It’s definitely a condition we are familiar with, but his loss can be your gain.

A Rainy Day in a 2017 Acura NSX

SEATTLE, Washington — Rain, the kind that spritzes on your face and follows you from block to block, has been our constant companion and we’re now wishing it would stop already.

We’re in town to check out the all-new 2017 Acura MDX Sport Hybrid, but we can’t tell you what that’s like until next week as Acura’s honchos have sworn us to secrecy. But trust us, you will not be disappointed.

Instead, we can tell you a little more about one of our favorite 2017 All-Stars — the Acura NSX. Believe it or not, the two share hybrid technology.

2017 Acura NSX with MDX

Although the NSX would probably not be our first choice vehicle for rainy weather driving, it’s a heck of a lot of fun anyway. Plus, in Seattle it rains a lot — an average of 36.15 inches a year, according to the website WeatherDB — making wet-weather driving an integral part of the ownership experience.

The driver’s seat of Acura’s halo car is a good place to be. It fits like a glove and it doesn’t overwhelm you with a ton of gadgetry. It’s probably one on the few supercars you can jump into and simply drive. To keep us from wrecking ourselves, British racer Stefan Wilson is our co-pilot for this quick ride.

2017 Acura NSX Door

Earlier in the morning, Acura VP and general manager Jon Ikeda told us that 400 NSXs are already in the hands of new owners and out on the road.

Driving the supercar through the North Cascades is an exercise in fun. The NSX, which can sprint from 0-60 mph in a blistering 2.7 seconds, is properly fast.

The twin-turbocharged hybrid packs a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that delivers 406 lb-ft of torque. There are two electric motors up front that add an additional 36 hp each and another in the rear that produces another 47 hp. The combined total is 573 hp and the engine is mated to a 9-speed dual clutch automatic transmission.

Since we are not on the track and there are no Teslas around to race, we try and keep it within the posted speed limits. We are running it in quiet mode because of the rain and trying not to scare the neighbors surrounding a nearby golf course. Sadly, before we know it our brief time with the NSX is over and we get back to the hybrid MDX.

Could the NSX work as a daily driver? Hell yeah — just watch out for those parking curbs. As for how the hybrid technology’s implementation in the MDX SUV compares to that in the NSX, we’ll let you know next week.
